Hair has long been an integral part of Black cultures across the African diaspora, each with its own unique styles, traditions, and histories. No matter what, though, you can always count on it to be fly. The artistry of Black hairstyles is obvious. Whether it grows from our heads or it doesn’t, there is a clear finesse, intention, and beauty to everything we create. And Michelle O’Connor, Ulta Beauty Pro Team Member and Global Artistic Director for L’Oreal, demonstrates just that in this short for Ulta Beauty and Beauty Noire, highlighting the beauty of Black hair.
“I often times compare hair to fabric,” O’Connor shares. “They both require the proper care. I tend to reframe the way people receive highly-textured hair. It’s just really explaining that it requires more care. You would not throw your silk blouse in the washing machine. It’s not better or worse, it’s just different.”

In this short, O’Connor creates a ‘70s-style look fit for a disco queen. She incorporates braids, curls, and fluffy extensions to give a voluminous effect which not only captures the spirit of the decade she was inspired by, but the rich traditions and history behind the techniques.
To achieve the look, O’Connor used products you can find at your local Ulta Beauty. To prep the model’s scalp, she used Kreyòl Essence Save Our Scalp Serum S.O.S. Serum. Next to add moisture to the hair, she raked through Design Essentials’s African Chebé Anti-Breakage Leave-in Conditioner, before adding the Donna’s Recipe Whipped Vanilla Curl Enhancing Gel over top to define her texture. To speed up the drying process, she grabbed the Patten Beauty Blow Dryer with the diffuser attachment to gently dry the curls before adding kinky clip-ins, brushed out for extra volume, to give the overall look of that ‘70s drama.
